METS WIN 4-3!!!

The Mets take the series against the Cubs winning 2 of 3. Dillon Gee didn’t have much of his best stuff, although he only gave up 3 runs in 5 innings pitched. He gave up a pair of homeruns, which included one to the opposing pitcher. Gee might have had a chance at a win, but the Mets offense wasn’t able to help him out while he was on the mound.

It wasn’t until Gee exited the game that the Mets began scoring. Juan Lagares tied the game 3-3 with a two-run blast in the 7th, the first of his major league career. Daniel Murphy,who batted in the leadoff spot for the first time in 4 years, then extended his hitting streak to 8 games with an 8th inning tie-breaking homerun to give the Mets the 4-3 lead. David Wright also extended his hitting streak to 7 consecutive games. Ruben Tejada also had a pair of hits, a single in the 7th and another one in the 9th.

The bullpen was fantastic. Greg Burke came in and threw 11 pitches in the 6th, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out a batter. Scott Rice entered the game in the 7th and was very impressive. Rice pitched two innings, throwing 28 pitches while giving up no hits, no runs and ultimately earning the win. Bobby Parnell then closed the game out with a 1-2-3 9th inning, earning his 6th save of the season.

The Mets are giving Ike Davis many chances to break out of yet another ugly slump. However, each chance he’s been given has resulted in zero change from the talented first baseman.

The patience the Mets have with Davis is understandable, yet also baffling at the same time. Last season, Davis experienced an eerily similar slump which he ultimately broke out of by finishing the year with an impressive 32 HR and 90 RBI. The Mets are allowing him to work out his issues at the plate in the majors, while there’s possible help lurking in the minors. I’ll add, players such as Ike Davis with less than 3 years of MLB experience don’t usually have that opportunity.

What if Ike Davis had started last season (2012) and this season (2013) like he started the 2010 and 2011 seasons? Imagine what he could have offered to the struggling Mets lineup. Maybe Davis has just become a slow starter? I doubt it. I honestly doubt that a slow start is to blame for his 46 strikeouts in only the second month of the season.

Ike Davis is still one of my favorite players on the Mets. But I think he should be demoted so he could work on his skills at the plate with less pressure on his shoulders.

What do you think the Mets should do about him? And when?
