Mike Baxter saves Dillon Gee’s night in the first inning by making a great leaping catch against the outfield wall, and the Mets double up the runner  retreating to first.

Mets Lose 11-5

The Mets (24-21) lost to the Padres (17-29) by the score of 11-5 tonight at Citi Field.

For a full recap and box score, check out SNY.TV.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Jeremy Hefner allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out three over 3 2/3 innings pitched.
  • David Wright was 3-for-5, including hitting his fifth homerun of the season, a double and two runs batted in. Wright is now batting .405 this season.
  • Ike Davis hit a pinch hit two-run single in the eighth inning.
  • Justin Turner hit a pinch hit double, his fourth of the season.
  • Lucas Duda and Scott Hairston each had a single.
  • Andres Torres broke his 0-for-17 slump with a single, going 1-for-2.
  • Manny Acosta allowed three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four in two relief innings pitched.
  • Rob Carson allowed a run in an inning pitched.
  • The Mets were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
  • The game was delayed by rain for 68 minutes between the second and third inning.

Mike Nichols: You really could steal the headline for tonight’s game from Milli Vanilli and Blame it on the Rain because it was just that for Jeremy Hefner. The right-hander came out being efficient and throwing strikes cruising through the first two innings before the rain came to ruin Hefner’s and the Mets evening. After an hour and eight minute rain delay, Hefner came out to start the top of the third and was immediately bum rushed by the meager hitting Padres lineup, giving up six runs over the next inning and two-thirds, including three consecutive doubles in the third inning.

You essentially cannot judge Hefner or how he may contribute going forward based on this performance. Doing so would be unfair. Hefner should chalk this one up to bad luck, shake it off and look forward to his next start.

David. Wright. Period. That’s it. What more is there to say? He continues to be simply nothing short of amazing this season.

Good for Ike Davis to come off the bench tonight to stroke a laser to right field driving in two runs. Perhaps the confidence his manager and front office showed today by not sending Davis to the minors to work out his hitting issues an option will help Ike’s mental approach. Tonight was a small, but very big first step. Build on it, Ike. The Mets need Chaos.

The Mets continue their four-game series against the Padres with Dillon Gee (3-3, 5.44 ERA) taking on Anthony Bass (2-4, 2.89 ERA). Game time is 7:10 PM.

Mets lose 11-5. That was a really long game.

"The most important thing you have to understand is yourself. I don’t know what’s happening. I’m not privy to anything that’s being said in that dugout. I don’t have an idea what the hitting instructor is talking to Ike Davis about. Ike Davis came up as a very good prospect as a hitter. He has very good talent. But right now, he’s so messed up in his head, it’s beyond comprehension. I’ve watched the Mets on TV quite a bit, and he’s had the bat in different positions, he’s pumping that thing up and down; he’s not giving himself much of a chance. I think he’s gotta slow it down, and be quieter. If your hands start moving down when that ball is coming, you’re not getting there. He does that a lot. He’s going to get out of this thing, whether he’s got to go to the minors and get himself together. I had to do that once myself in my career. What Ike has to start doing is study himself and know why he’s doing well when he’s doing well, and have an idea. Every pitcher has a strength and a weakness. Some don’t have as many weaknesses as others. You can’t go up there hoping. You have to go up there with an idea what you want to do against that pitcher, and you have to try and execute that. Right now, I think he’s so confused, I’m not too sure giving him a little time to get his act together wouldn’t be the best thing in the world for the young man, as terrible as that sounds. But, Ike will be back. It’s not easy to have the type of long-term injury the previous year and automatically come back and swing the bat great."
